Dry Ice (38:19)
Recorded at the Railyard, Santa Fe August 12, 2006
by Gaspard Cabanes and Alex Ferris

Technically speaking, this is not an anarchestra recording. I considered it one, but Gaspard objected (he didn't think we should call Anarchestra Anarchestra when he was involved in it either, but got outvoted on that) . I am releasing it as if it is one because I think it's worth hearing.

All the sounds on this recording were made by contacting metal with dry ice (-109 degrees fahrenheit). The metal sounds as its heat causes the dry ice to sublimate (transition directly from solid to gas) where the two make contact. The expansive pressure of the gas pushes the two apart and the sublimation stops. In microseconds they recontact and the process repeats which generates the sounds (i.e., the number of contacts generate a frequency).

We amplified the metal (instruments and stock from around the shop) with (contact mikes (piezos) and microphones and recorded live to four tracks. No effects were used.

The cover picture is from a performance at the High Mayhem Festival a few months later.
